Agnico Eagle Finland Oy Kittilä Mine is located in the Lapland region of northern Finland 150 kilometres north from Rovaniemi. It is one of the largest known gold deposits in Europe. Kittilä mine poured its first gold on 14 January 2009, and achieved commercial production four months later. On the basis of the known ore reserves, the mine produces about 200,000 ounces of gold each year and its operations will continue until the mid-2030s.
Currently Kittilä mine is building a 1,044 metre deep shaft which enables the utilization of the deeper parts of gold deposit in an economically sensible way. At the same time mill expansion raises processing plant’s capacity by 400,000 tonnes to 2.0 million tonnes per year.
