Summertime greetings from the Chairman
We in the mining industry have reason to be happy with current trends. Investments are being put into mines and supporting activities, while enterprises in the field of mining technology are hiring more staff and preparing for raising capacity. The growth in the demand for manpower is also evident from a report we commissioned from KPMG.
Finnish success stories from mines played a particularly important role in the internationalisation and success of these and slightly smaller enterprises. Using domestic references, companies, such as my employer Forcit, have plausibly been able to take bigger steps forward in our immediate markets and further interest has even been inspired from much further afield. I cannot emphasise enough the role of the Finnish mining industry on this journey that is just beginning. The Mining Finland programme also deserves praise for the work it has done in promoting exports.
We provide our own input in discussions about corporate social responsibility through the Finnish Network for Sustainable Mining, of which we are a founding member. The network has brought together actors from different sectors to search for the ways for ensuring mining is conducted as responsibly as possible. We have put great effort into the operations of the network with, for instance, training sessions organised in the spring focusing on the responsibility of mining operations and exploration.
